Federal officials are proposing changes to national standards that would widen the number of ingredients that go into beer and force brewers to list every ingredient on a can or bottle.
Experts say there are any number of beers out there that violate existing standards, either through ingredients or fermentation methods.
Since 1990, the number of Canadian breweries has shot up from 62 to 750.
”We’re not going to be excluding anything that is currently defined as a beer, but it does provide … criteria for brewers to work with,” according to Luke Harford, president of Beer Canada, which represents over 50 companies that make about 90% of the country’s beer.
Ottawa’s proposing a two-year implementation period starting next year.
