Zoning amendments to allow laneway suites in Toronto and East York neighbourhoods have been approved by city council.

The 30-5 vote was the culmination of years of advocacy by politicians, who argued that such a move would help address a shortage of rental units, while making home ownership more affordable because of their income-generating potential.
Councillor Joe Mihevc envisions many laneway suites being developed inside existing garages or in additions that’ll be built above them, and that they’ll be especially desirable for those with aging parents or adult children still living at home.
City staff now expect between 100 and 300 such suites to be built every year.
