Canada’s largest private sector union is urging people who want Ontario’s guaranteed income pilot project to continue – to contact their M-P-P’s.
Unifor says the pilot is being cancelled without giving Ontarians any information on the success of the program – adding the union has seen Conservative governments before that are afraid of data and science.
Social Services Minister Lisa MacLeod announced yesterday that the province was winding down the pilot – that provided payments to about 6,000 low-income people in communities including Hamilton, Brantford, Thunder Bay and Lindsay.
MacLeod said the program was ineffective, but when asked how the government determined that before the pilot was over – she said only that it was expensive and unsustainable.
