The legendary “First Silver Dollar” of the Americas, which was struck in 1538 and recovered from the shipwreck of the “Golden Fleece”, is expected to sell for upwards of $500,000, when it goes to auction Friday in Philadelphia.
The one for sale is the finest example of just three known to exist.
The historic silver coin traces its origins to Mexico City. It was minted just three years after the Spanish Empire established its presence in the New World.
Heritage Auctions is hosting the sale which begins at 6 p.m. Friday night at the Pennsylvania Convention Centre.
