Toronto councillors are holding a special meeting to consider a potential legal challenge of provincial legislation that will cut the size of city council nearly in half – from 47 to 25.
They’re currently reviewing a report from the city solicitor, who is not recommending any specific course of action, but says if instructed to mount a challenge then her office ”will represent the city’s interests with vigor and tenacity presenting reasoned, persuasive arguments.”
The Superior Court’s set aside August 31 to hear arguments challenging the legislation.
Mayor John Tory, who supports a legal challenge, says the process by which this was made was ”wrong and is unacceptable.”
Mayoral candidate and former chief city planner Jennifer Keesmaat is critical of what she considers ”a weak response from a weak mayor” to the legislation.
A statement from Tory’s campaign manager accuses her of ”trying to play politics.”
