The Supreme Court of Canada is to announce Thursday morning if it’ll hear an appeal from the Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) that would keep its agents from publishing home sales data.

Realtors claim if it’s made available online, buyers and sellers would be able to more easily educate themselves on how to price homes and negotiate and would not have to rely on agents.
Canada’s largest real estate board began its legal battle in 2011 when the Competition Bureau challenged the TREB’s policy preventing publication of such information, arguing it impedes competition and digital innovation.
After the Competition Tribunal agreed with the bureau two years ago and later the Federal Court of Appeal upheld that ruling, the real estate board then went to the high court to try to protect the sales data.
