The day after meeting with Toronto Mayor John Tory, Justin Trudeau expressed disappointment by the Ford government’s use of the notwithstanding clause to slash the size of city council.
The prime minister adds he trusts Ontarians will reflect on whether or not the government made the right decision on overriding the Charter of Rights on this issue.
While ”disappointed” by the move Trudeau says he won’t weigh in on the debate about the size of council.
Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney says Canada has a ”problem” when a premier can overrule the country’s courts.

He say he’s never been a ”big fan” of the clause but that using it was also not ”undemocratic”.
Mulroney’s daughter, Caroline, is Ontario’s Attorney General, but the former prime minister says he had not spoken to her about the decision.
