New research suggests women who have experienced sexual harassment or assault are at a greater risk of developing higher blood pressure, and poorer mental health and sleep in midlife.

The study out of Pittsburgh, published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, recorded the blood pressure, weight and height of 304 women and asked them about sexual harassment, assault, and any depressive or anxiety symptoms.

Scientists found women who’d experienced this trauma were about twice as likely to ended up with elevated blood pressure and poorer sleep.

The study authors also say doctors should ask about sexual harassment and assault prevention while working at improving women’s health.
