The Ford government intends to permit turban-wearing Sikhs to ride motorcycles without helmets.
The province says this will recognize their civil rights and religious expression.
The premier says road safety remains a priority but that the government also believes individuals have personal accountability and responsibility with respect to their own well-being.
Turbaned Sikhs are already exempt from wearing helmets in Alberta, Manitoba and B.C.
The Ontario government also says the U.K. implemented such a exemption 42 years ago.
