At least one city in the GTA has decided there will be no pot smoking in public.
At a special meeting this morning, Markham city council voted 11-0 in favour of a new bylaw that restricts the consumption of cannabis to ”private residences.”
It effectively replaces a section of provincial legislation that allows marijuana to be consumed wherever smoking is allowed, excepted for motor vehicles and boats.
Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti says the council vote reflects the feeling of the community.
”It has been clear from our residents that they weren’t happy with the new rules so we passed this blaw in response to that … we started hearing a lot of concerns about people just talking a walk down the street with their elderly parents … while someone is beside them smoking cannabis,” said Scarpitti.
Queen’s Park says municipalities are free to pass bylaws further restricting where the drug can be consumed, although so far Markham’s the only community in the GTA to do so.
