The appointment of Toronto Police Superintendent Ron Taverner as top provincial police officer smells if you ask the opposition parties.
NDP Leader Andrea Horwath, among those calling for an investigation into the hiring, says the appointment ”stinks all the way around and it goes straight to the premier’s integrity or lack thereof.”
Interim Liberal Leader John Fraser, also in favour of an investigation, says it’s important Doug Ford address the appearance of a conflict-of-interest.
The qualification requirements were changed partway through the hiring process.
Before that, Taverner was two ranks below the minimum qualifications.
After they were changed, he got the OPP commissioner’s job.
With Taverner a close friend of the premier, some are questioning the hiring process and wondering if Doug Ford interfered.
The premier says he was not involved in the hiring, adding the process was transparent.
