An interim report on racial profiling by police has found Black people are far more likely to be seriously injured or killed in an interaction with Toronto police officers.

The report by the Ontario Human Rights Commission calls the findings ”disturbing and raises serious concerns about racial discrimination in use of force.”

Between January 2013 and June 2017, while making up only 8.8% of Toronto’s population, Black residents were involved in 70% of fatal police shootings and 61.5% of police use of force that resulted in death.

The interim report says the findings go ”some way toward explaining why trust between TPS and Black communities remains fractured, despite decades of protest, reports, recommendations and commitments related to anti-Black racism.”

The Toronto Police Service and Police Services Board have released a joint statement in response.

The final report is scheduled to be done in 2020.
