You might soon be eligible for hundreds of dollars in compensation if you’re bumped from a flight with larger airlines because of overbooking or have lost or damaged luggage.
Those are just some of the proposed regulations in the Trudeau government’s so-called passenger bill of rights.
Legislation was passed last May and public consultations followed in June and July.
The Canadian Transportation Agency’s proposed regulations, that’ll be published this Saturday, will subject to public comment until February 20, 2019.
The proposed compensation for anyone overbooked or forced to sit through long delays could be as much as $2,400, which would apply for delays of more than nine-hours.
Transport Minister Marc Garneau calls it a ”fair and balanced” approach that’s clear and transparent, adding he believes ”it’s the best passenger rights bill in the world,” as it would apply to all airlines flying into, out of and within Canada.
The final regulations, expected in the spring, must be approved by cabinet.
Garneau expects the new rules to be in place by next summer.
