Saying it’s heard the program’s not working for families with autistic children, the Ford government’s announced plans in hopes of clearing waiting lists within 18 months.

While 8,400 children are currently receiving therapy, some 23,000 diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders are waiting for treatment.

The government intends to give funding for treatment directly to families, instead of regional service providers.

”We will empower parents and families to make the best choices for their children.  We’re going to provide families with real choices, in the types of service they receive and where they receive it,” said Children, Community and Social Services Minister Lisa MacLeod.

The amount of funding will depend on the length of time a child will be in the program and support will be aimed at lower-and-middle-income families.

For example, a child entering the program at age 2 would be eligible to receive up to $140,000 for treatment, while one beginning at age 7 would get up to $55,000.
