Bruce McArthur will be 91-years-old when he will be eligible to apply for parole after spending at least 25-years behind bars for the murders of eight men with ties to Toronto’s gay village.
Superior Court Justice John McMahon told the packed University Avenue courtroom there is very little chance the former self-employed landscaper will ever be granted parole.
Crown lawyers had asked the judge to ensure McArthur would have to serve at lest 50 years.
While the judge says the murders were ”pure evil” and the harsher sentence would have been ”symbolic,” McMahon cited McArthur’s guilty plea and his age as reasons for his decision.
He also believes McArthur would have kept killing had he not been arrested.
Mayor John Tory has issued a statement, in which he says we should all remember the victims.
With the trial now over, and as someone who helped establish the ongoing, independent external review, Tory says he looks forward to discussing with colleagues and with the community how to best address other key issues.
”I remain absolutely committed to making sure the families and friends of these men and the public at large have answer to all the questions that have arisen from this case.”
