Federal Ethics Commissioner Mario Dion says there is sufficient cause to proceed with an inquiry into the actions of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the matter of his office and SNC-Lavalin.
The NDP asked for the probe after it was alleged the Prime Minister’s Office wanted then-attorney general Jody Wilson-Raybould to help the Quebec engineering giant avoid criminal prosecution.
Justin Trudeau says he ”welcomed” the examination, adding he thought it’s important Canadians continue to have confidence in the system.
The prime minister also repeated he did not direct her to take action and that Wilson-Raybould acknowledged he had told her last fall that any decision on matters involving the office of public prosecutions were hers alone.
She’s refused to comment on the allegation, citing solicitor-client privilege, but, both the Conservatives and New Democrats say that privilege should be waived so Canadians can hear the full story.
But Trudeau says it’s not that simple.
”And that is why I have asked Minister (David) Lametti … the attorney-general and minister of justice, to look into the matter of solicitor-client privilege … and get back to me with recommendations.”
