The Trudeau Liberals used their majority to defeat an NDP motion, supported by the Conservatives, calling for a public inquiry into allegations the former attorney general and justice minister was pressured by the Prime Minister’s Office to help SNC-Lavalin avoid criminal prosecution.

Jody Wilson-Raybould abstained, telling the Commons she did not think it would be appropriate given it’s a matter in which she was personally involved.

”I understand fully that Canadians want to know the truth and want transparency,” she added.

”Privilege and confidentiality are not mine to waive, and I hope that I have the opportunity to speak my truth.”

But two Liberals, Beaches-East York MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smth and New Brunswick MP Wayne Long joined the opposition in supporting the motion.

Wilson-Raybould has said she remains bound by solicitor-client privilege.

She’s retained retired Supreme Court justice Thomas Cromwell to advise her on what she can and cannot say.

The prime minister has asked the current justice minister and attorney general to review the matter of solicitor-client privilege in this case.

Wilson-Raybould is to testify before the Commons justice committee, which is probing the affair.
