The Ontario Children, Community and Social Services Minister is denying that the wait list for autism treatment was frozen, following revelations that Ontario’s social services ministry directed autism therapy providers in the fall to only honor previous service commitments.

The news comes as parents and autism advocates express their anger and dissatisfaction at the governments new programme announced earlier this month.

The updated programme is intended to clear the wait list of 23,000 children, many of whom have been waiting years for treatment, however, caregivers say it does not adequately meet the needs of children with autism.

The ministry said in a statement issued on Monday that agencies were told in October of last year to only bring new clients into service if service commitments had already been made.

But Minister Lisa MacLeod says it’s ”erroneous” to say there was a freeze on the wait list.

Government documents also suggest that service providers were instructed not to tell families about the October directive.
