A painting by noted French artist Henri Matisse is expected to fetch almost $6 million at next month’s Heffel Fine Art Auction House sales in Toronto.
“Femme assise sur un balcon,” was painted in 1919 and has supplanted 17 works by Group of Seven artist A.Y. Jackson as the star of the sales.
In all, the spring sale features 116 works and is estimated to be worth between $15 and $23 million. The Jackson pieces are being sold off by Art Gallery of Ontario. There are also three works by another Group of Seven Artist, Lawren Harris. They include a sketch of Lake Superior and are expected to go for upwards of $350 thousand.
Previews are scheduled for Calgary, Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto ahead of the live auction at Toronto’s Design Exchange May 29th.
