Online hatred’s behind a rise in anti-Semitism which resulted in a record number of Jewish Canadians assaulted and harassed in 2018.
Just two days after the deadly shooting at a synagogue near San Diego, B’Nai Brith Canada says there were over 2,000 incidents of hatred towards Jews last year; a 16% increase over the previous year, and third straight annual increase.
On top of that, the Jewish advocacy group says it’s the most incidents it’s ever recorded in over 30 years.
80% occurred on social media; Facebook, Twitter or via email and text messaging.
B’Nai Brith wants dedicated hate-crime units in every major Canadian police service as well as a national plan to tackle online hate.
