The province has announced it will test speed limits of 110-km/h on stretches of three southern Ontario highways as part of a two-year-pilot project starting in September.
The pilot will include the QEW between Hamilton and St. Catharines, Highway 402 from London to Sarnia and Highway 417 between Ottawa and the Quebec border
An additional stretch of highway in Northern Ontario, as yet not identified, may also be part of the pilot.
Transportation Minister Jeff Yurek says a series of public consultations will begin in the next few weeks.
Currently, the posted limit on the 401, 402, 403, 417 and QEW is 100-km/h while other provincial highways range from 80 and 90-km/h.
Speed limits have not been reviewed in Ontario since the 1970s when they were lowered from 110-km/h to 100 because of the energy crisis and remained there since.
Yurek points out six other provinces have posted speed limits of 110 on certain highways.
