The mayors of the province’s largest cities, including Toronto’s John Tory, are once again asking the Ford government to delay retroactive cuts to municipal funding.
A statement released after the meeting of the Large Urban Mayors’ Caucus of Ontario (LUMCO) says the municipal leaders want to help Queen’s Park to reduce the $11.7-billion deficit but that they cannot absorb the cuts after their budgets have already been approved.
”We again call on the Government of Ontario to defer the implementation of these funding cuts so that the Province and cities can work together on how to minimize the impact on the people we all represent, and the services they depend on,” said Guelph Mayor Cam Guthrie, chair of LUMCO, in the statement.
The Large Urban Mayors’ Caucus includes mayors from 28 cities with a population of 100,000 or more, representing 67% of Ontario’s population.
