How much screen time is too much for young children and teenagers?

New guidelines have been been released by the Canadian Pediatric Society.

Doctor Michelle Pinto leads the society’s digital health task force and says the guidelines emphasize how and when screens should be used based on age, rather than prescriptive time limits.

“We’re asking parents to focus on those things that lead to good health first, like reading, school, and physical activity. Then if you add up all of that and you still have a little bit of extra free time left for recreational screen time, then that’s the message. Prioritize the other daily life habits and then screen time can follow after that,” Pinto explains.

Pinto says parents should set rules about screen use when kids are young so they can avoid fights later when they are teenagers.
