With a nature reserve just outside Montreal serving as a backdrop, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the government will ban single-use plastics (SUPs) – such as straws, bags, cutler – as early as 2021.

A full banned list has not yet been released but sources say it could include things such as stir sticks, plates, fast-food containers, and polystyrene cups.

The prime minister says the government will first research what should be banned and that it will follow the model chosen by the European Union.

Trudeau also says the government intends to make companies that manufacture plastic products or sell them, to take responsibility for recycling their wast.

Canada, the U.K., France, Germany, Italy and the European Union signed on to the Ocean Plastics Charter at last June’s G-7 summit in Quebec, agreeing to look for ways to deal with plastics litter.

Environment and Climate Change Canada says Canadians throw out over 34-million plastic bags every day, that often ends up in landfills.
