Andrew Scheer is weighing in on the term “genocide” being used to describe what has been done to generations of Indigenous women and girls in Canada, saying it’s not the right word.

The Conservative leader says the deaths and abuse inflicted on Indigenous women are ”heartbreaking” and must be addressed, but using the term genocide only invites international action and scrutiny that aren’t warranted.

The federal inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls released its final report in early June, with commissioners saying Canada’s “series of actions and omissions” have allowed Indigenous women to be targeted in numerous ways that add up to what they called an ongoing genocide.

Scheer says the ramifications of the use of the term genocide are very profound, and that the ”tragedy” involving missing and murdered women and girls ”is it’s own thing” and does not fall into that category.

In the wake of the reports release, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that he ”accepts” the word, but stopped short of saying he agreed with it’s use in this context.
