During these hot humid days of summer, Toronto Public Health is changing the approach to extreme heat with a new all-summer approach.

Doctor Christine Navarro is Toronto’s Associate Medical Officer of Health, and says the Heat Relief Network has been implemented so that city residents have a broader network of cool spaces to get relief.

“270 heat relief members across the city in every neighbourhood, including libraries, shopping centres, community centres, civic centres, pools, are all places that people can go to get some relief from the heat, and that’s going to be open all Summer round,” Navarro explained.

Doctor Navarro says this is different from the previous approach when there were 7 cooling centres, only available during a heat alert.

Children and older adults are especially vulnerable to the effects of heat. Dr. Navarro says it’s especially important to keep the very old and the very young cool and hydrated, and everybody should make sure they drink plenty of fluids during the summer.
