Eight in ten seniors who were admitted to hospital with injuries in this country in 2017-18 were there because they fell.

That according to just released data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) which also shows vehicle crashes were the second leading cause.
”Seniors are the fastest-growing population in Canada and it’s important that we take steps to prevent injuries and hospitalizations among this age group.  Our data provides information to seniors and their families that allows them to have important discussions around safety and strategies to reduce falls and vehicle collisions,” said Greg Webster of CIHI.
One fall-prevention expert at the University Health Network, Geoff Fernie, says the high rate of falls among seniors is to be expected.
He adds there are a number of ways that those 65 and older can prevent falls, including by checking that their shoes have good traction, and holding on to handrails when using the stairs.
