The provincial decision not to provide operating funding for 51 new child-care centres in Toronto schools is being criticized by Mayor John Tory who says the Ford government is moving in the ”wrong direction”.
The centres would have opened just over 3,000 spaces.
Tory says he’ll urge Queen’s Park to reconsider its decision.
The projects, proposed in 2016, are not longer considered eligible for provincial funding.
The mayor says property taxes were not aimed at covering social programs now being affected by the province’s funding cuts.
Tory vows city officials will speak with their provincial counterparts about a decision he calls a ”step backward.”
