Canadian music legends Ian and Sylvia Tyson, whose hits include ”Four Strong Winds,” will receive individual inductions at Calgary’s National Music Centre September 5.
The former couple met in the summer of 1959 when Sylvia moved from her hometown of Chatham to Toronto at the age of 18 to pursue her dreams of being a folk singer.
They began a relationship onstage and off before moving to New York.
Ian and Sylvia Tyson’s second album, 1964’s ”Four Strong Winds,” proved to be their breakthrough, helped by the popularity of the title song, which Ian wrote after an evening with Bob Dylan.
One of the most influential songs ever, it’s been covered by the likes of Neil Young, Johnny Cash and John Denver.
Sylvia wrote ”You Were on My Mind,” for her and Ian and it went on to be covered by the folk-rock group ”We Five,” who took it to No. 3 on the Billboard charts in 1965.
The couple divorced in the mid-70s.
Ian and Sylvia Tyson’s inductions will coincide with the release of ”Ian & Sylvia The Lost Tapes,” a collection of newly discovered concert recordings, alternate studio takes of their hits and previously unreleased songs.
The double album will be out September 6.
