There’s now a quicker, free way for Canadians to apply for pardons for simple cannabis possession.

Bill C-93, which became law in July, waived the fee and the five-to-10-year wait periods, but until now it was unclear how Canadians with pot convictions could apply for pardons.

Canadians can now apply for pardons through the Parole Board website.

The government estimates upwards of 250,000 Canadians have pot convictions and believes applications will be in the tens of thousands.

Experts believe that’s unlikely because most Canadians with convictions have possession charges bundled with other charges, and also that most who wanted pardons already received them.

In addition, police did not pursue simple pot possession charges in the final days before legalization, to avoid clogging the courts.
