Ontario’s attorney general insists it’s the federal government’s jurisdiction to pay legal aid for refugees, and that’s why the Ford Tories cancelled it.

Doug Downey made his comments in response to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s announcement that Ottawa is spending $26.8 million dollars this year to make up for funding withdrawn by the Ford government earlier this year.

“Immigration in parts is shared federal-provincial, but there’s a supreme court case indicating this is federal jurisdiction. It’s a federal tribunal. It’s federal jurisdiction to decide rates of immigration falls squarely on the feds,” Downey explained.

While in Parkdale making the funding announcement, the prime minister also took the opportunity to take a campaign style shot at not only the Ford PCs but all Conservative governments.

“Conservative politicians like to say they’re for the people, then they cut services for the most vulnerable. It’s what they do,” Trudeau declared.

But Ontario’s attorney general says it’s a bit rich for the prime minister to say this, when the federal government only covered 35 percent of the cost of immigration and refugee legal aid services until this year.
