A new report shows that cleaning up polluted waterways is good for the economy.
The study conducted by the Michigan-based International Association of Great Lakes research shows cleaning up some of the most heavily polluted areas in the Great Lakes’ region has brought billions of dollars worth of economic development.
Rehabbing these areas has also been proven to bring communities closer together.
The study looked at efforts to restore harbours, rivers and other areas contaminated during the industrial boom with toxic wastes.
The work is being done to clean up 43 “areas of concern” in Canada and the U-S. The list was complied in the 80s and there’s still much work to be done.
Some of the bright spots highlighted have been Toronto’s Lake Ontario waterfront, the Buffalo River in New York and the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland.
