The Provincial government’s plan to allow alcohol sales in more places is getting a thumbs up from Canada’s competition commissioner.
Matthew Boswell wrote an open letter to Ontario Finance Minister Rod Phillips. In it, he says the competition bureau approves of recommendations made by a special adviser.
That includes the government working to allow more retail outlets to sell booze.
Boswell says this will encourage price competition and could help lower alcohol prices.
As things stand now, a maximum 450 grocery stores can sell alcohol. And licensed retailers have to charge identical prices for products.
Bars and restaurants are forced to buy their alcohol from the LCBO and the Beer Store at consumer prices rather than at wholesale.
