The day after the three levels of government announced $4.5-million in funding to help Toronto police deal with rising gun violence, the prime minister paid a visit to Mayor John Tory.
After a closed door meeting, in which they also talked about transit and affordable housing, Justin Trudeau said they agreed they can’t ”simply arrest our way out of this problem.”
The mayor says they must address the root causes of gun violence and get tougher with criminals, who often laugh, ”literally laugh at things like bail and sentencing.”
Pressed on whether his government would support a call to ban handguns, the prime minister would only say the Liberals platform for the upcoming election would include ”strengthening gun control.”
