An 11-week strategy, called ”Project Community Space,” is how Toronto police intend to use recently announced government funding to try to reduce escalating gun violence, which in many cases involves street gangs.

Chief Mark Saunders explains how the plan will work.

”The project will include officers from across the city, under the centralized command of the integrated Gun and Gang Task Force.  Work will be intelligence-led and include, but not be limited to proactive monitoring of bail compliance, more engagement with communities and community programs, increased presence and visibility of officers in areas frequently associated with street gangs and gun violence.”

The chief offered few specifics however, saying he doesn’t want to give up a lot of the ”playbook.”

The plan will end October 31 and police will provide an update in November.

There have been 267 shootings this year, including 55 last month and 32 in August, as of Monday.
