Another important World War II anniversary is being celebrated today.
Operation Dragoon was the code name for the Allied invasion of Southern France from the Mediterranean which began 75 years ago today.
The invasion of Provence was initially planned to occur in conjunction the Allied landing in Normandy two months earlier, but the lack of available resources led to its postponement
The invasion involved allied troops from France’s African Territories, Britain, Canada and the US.
Canadian commandos provided flank protection. Air support was provided by Australia and South Africa.
Operation Dragoon was considered a success in that it enabled the allies to liberate most of southern France in just four weeks while inflicting heavy casualties on German forces.
