Smart Track was a centrepiece of Mayor John Tory’s 2014 election plan.

Now, it’s finally got some money behind it.

Tory was joined by members of the federal and provincial governments for a funding announcement at the site of one of the proposed stations in Scarborough.

“I’m reminded of that song by The Turtles called ‘So Happy Together’ and there’s a line in it that goes something like ‘imagine how the world could be, so very fine. So happy together.'” said Tory about his happiness that all three levels of government could come together to get important projects off the drawing board.

“I think this is the first time we’ve all been together for something like this, which is a significant announcement of step forward on actually building transit.”

The federal government is chipping in more than $1-billion to go to building six new stations on the Stoufville, Lakeshore East and Kitchener Go lines as well as a massive expansion of the Bloor-Yonge subway station.

The provincial and municipal governments will also be investing in the projects.

“When new lines are ultimately added to the network, it is (Bloor-Yonge) that will have to support the additional flow,” said François-Philippe Champagne, the federal Minister of Infrastructure and Communities. “The Bloor-Yonge station is the keystone to transit expansion in Toronto.”

Tory says he sees no reason why construction should be underway by next year.
