Mark Saunders will remain Toronto police chief until the end of April 2021.
The Police Services Board’s announced it’s decided to renew his appointment for one more year.
”Chief Saunders has been an exceptional leader through is term to date, and his renewed appointment signals the Board’s commitment to the full implementation of the modernization plan, which, upon completion, will cement the Toronto Police Service’s reputation as a world-class leader,” said Board Chair Andy Pringle in a statement.
Saunders says it’s been a ”great privilege” and that he’s ”humbled” and thanks the officers working under him.
This is just the second time in 40 years that a Toronto police chief has served more than one, five-year term.
Saunders predecessor, now federal Liberal cabinet minister, Bill Blair, served two full-terms between 2005 and 2015.
