Accusations of sexual harassment may have hurt him in North America, but it’s not the same in Europe where Placido Domingo was given a lengthy standing ovation when he performed Verdi’s Luisa Miller at the Salbzurg Festival.
It was his first performance since nine women accused him of sexual harassment.
Domingo and his co-stars all shared 10 minutes of applause at the end of the show but a standing ovation at the start of the show was for the 78-year-old opera legend alone.
Two U.S. opera houses cancelled planned appearances after the allegations were reported by the Associated Press, but European opera houses have so far confirmed engagements scheduled through November of next year.
The LA Opera, where Domingo is general director, has launched an investigation.
