Justin Trudeau promises to give municipalities the authority to ban handguns, but stops short of a national ban.
The Liberal leader made the announcement after meeting with the mayor of Richmond Hill and mayors from Markham, Newmarket, Aurora, Whitby, Mississauga and Oakville, as well as a councillor from Brampton.

After making the announcement, the eight local leaders were asked for a show of hands on their support for a national ban.
All put up their hands.
The Liberals have said a national ban is too expensive for uncertain benefit.
The Ford government in Ontario has said it’s against allowing Toronto to impose a ban.
Trudeau says he plans to work with provinces to restore to them the ability to strengthen gun laws, if they choose.
