The Conservative Party once led the charge questioning the dual citizenship of the likes of former Liberal leader Stephane Dion, former NDP leader Thomas Mulcair and former Governor General Michaelle Jean.
The shoe’s on the other foot, now, as Conservative leader Andrew Scheer faces questions over his own dual citizenship after The Globe and Mail first reported that Scheer holds dual Canada-U.S. citizenship.
Scheer’s father was born in the U.S. and the Conservative Party says he’s in the process of renouncing his American citizenship.
The matter of dual citizenship may not have been an issue but it was Scheer himself who once wrote a blog post to his constituents in 2005 asking what they thought of Jean’s dual citizenship with France.
She gave up that passport before becoming Governor General.
When asked about the issue while on the campaign trail, Scheer said that nobody had ever asked about his dual citizenship.
