Seniors issues received some attention in last night’s french-language leaders debate ahead of the October 21st election.

All six main party leaders were asked, what they would do to help seniors, particularly women, who are living alone.

The translated answers began with Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer.

“For those who have retired, we will increase the age credit by a thousand dollars. Many of our tax credits will also be available to you,” promised Scheer.

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau began by saying that under his government, the guaranteed income supplement was raised for the country’s most vulnerable seniors, but that more needs to be done.

“That’s why we have promised to improve OAS (Old Age Security),” Trudeau continued, “We’ll increase it by 10 percent for those over 75, and if somebody loses their partner, we know that’s a very difficult moment, and that’s why we are going to increase the survivor’s benefit for the CPP and the QPP by up to 75 percent.”

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh began by saying he thinks it’s ridiculous that seniors have to deal with challenges around money.

“We’re setting up programs to help you,”Singh explained, “We will help with pensions and we will increase and improve services to seniors. We’re talking about pharmacare, dental care. This will bring down the cost of living and help you save money.”

And Green Party Leader Elizabeth May offered a personal perspective, as the only leader who’s turned 65.

“The Green Party is committed to increasing pension benefits, and I’m 65 years old myself, so I’m in the same position, but I’m not ready to retire just yet,” May offered.
