Donald Trump has demanded all NATO allies meet the threshold of spending 2% of their Gross Domestic Product on the military.
On the eve of the alliance’s 70th anniversary celebration in London, the U.S. president said Canada is ”slightly delinquent” when it comes to meeting NATO’s spending target.

At one point, with Justin Trudeau at his side, Trump asked the prime minister how close Canada is to that goal.
An awkward exchange among Canadian officials followed until the prime minister settled on 1.4% — the goal the federal government hopes to reach in 2024-25.
Despite the uncertainty, Trump seemed to be okay with it.
”They’re getting up to a level that’s quite acceptable,” the president said.
“They’re under 2% obviously, but they’re going up.”
