Despite improvements in organ donation practices, 200 people died in Canada last year while waiting for an organ transplant.

A new report from the Canadian Institute for Health Information reveals that in 2018, 2782 organ transplant procedures were performed. That’s an increase of 33 percent since 2009.

But wait lists are growing. More than 4000 Canadians are still waiting for an organ.

The report says with improvements in transplant technology and Canada’s aging population, more people are opting for organ transplants and this increased demand is leading to longer wait times for patients in need.

Demand is said to be highest for kidney transplants. Out of 3000 transplant procedures done last year, 1700 were for kidneys. Liver transplants are also near the top of the list.

The good news is that more people are making it known they want to donate their organs after they die; a 56 percent increase between 2009 and 2018.
