More recognition for Bianca Andreescu in her breakthrough year.
She’s the first tennis player to capture the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada’s athlete of the year.
The 19-year-old from Mississauga was the unanimous choice of 24 sports journalists.
Bianca began the season ranked 152nd in the world and reached 4th; the highest a Canadian has ever stood in the history of the Women’s Tennis Association rankings, after becoming Canada’s first Grand Slam singles champ with an upset of Serena Williams in the U.S. Open Final.
That plus winning the Rogers Cup and the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California helped her finish the season 5th.
In a statement from Tennis Canada, Andreescu said he was not expecting to win the Lou Marsh Trophy, was thankful but points out none of her success would have been possible without the support from all of Canada.
The Lou Marsh Trophy has been awarded annually since 1936; except for three years during the Second World War.
