One of the most high profile New Years Eve celebrations takes place in New York’s Times Square.

Organizers of this year’s event are using their countdown to focus on efforts to combat climate change.

A group of high school science teachers and students will press the button that starts the 60-second countdown for the famed ball drop.

The two teachers and four students selected have done a clean-air project and a fundraising walk to raise money for places lacking clean water.

Young people have gained new prominence in the struggle against climate change.

Swedish teenager Greta Toonberg sparked school strikes around the world … calling for world leaders to listen to the science and do more to fight global warming.
