A woman who gave birth to a boy she carried inside a transplanted womb says that the experimental procedure delivered a “miracle.”
“I cried a good amount of time just holding him and having that moment of I’m holding my baby that I carried,” said Jennifer Gobrecht at a news conference in Philadelphia on Thursday. She and her husband Drew Gobrecht admitted the journey was not an easy one.
But she says every time she looks at her son Benjamin’s face, she know it was worth it.
The 33-year-old, who was born without a uterus, underwent a 10-hour transplant procedure in 2018 after receiving a uterus from a deceased donor.
This is only the second baby born from a uterus from a deceased donor.
Dr. Kathleen O’Neill is one of the lead trial investigators at Penn Medicine, and says uterine transplantation could give couples like the Gobrechts another option to have children.
