The founder of ”Hair Club for Men,” who built the empire on his own hair loss, has died at 78.
Sy Sperling died in Florida after a long illness.
Getting frustrated with toupees, the balding New York City swimming pool salesman came up with a system where a nylon mesh cap was glued to the scalp.
The business took off as Sperling’s face, and hair, were on TV in commercials in the 1980s.
”I’m not only the Hair Club president,” he would say in the popular ad.
”I’m also a client.”
Sperling sold the company for $45-million in 2000.
He took pride in his charity work, most notably, Hair Club for Kids; a program that provided hair for free for those under 18 who lost hair from chemotherapy.
