Harvey Weinstein showed no visible reaction as a New York judge sentenced the disgraced movie producer to 23 years in prison for rape and sexual assault.
(CNN)
The soon to be 68-year-old Weinstein was convicted last month of raping a once-aspiring actress in a New York City hotel room in 2013 and assaulting a former TV and film production assistant at his apartment seven years earlier.
He faced a maximum of 29 years in prison.
Before the sentence was handed down, Weinstein broke his courtroom silence with a rambling plea for mercy in which he said his ”empathy has grown” and that he felt ”remorse for this situation” but that at the same time he was perplexed by the case and the MeToo climate in which it unfolded.
Weinstein’s lawyers had argued a legnthy prison sentence would, in effect, be a life sentence.
They wanted a five-year sentence..
His lawyers plan to appeal.
Meanwhile, Weinstein faces charges in connection with the rape of a woman at a LA hotel in 2013 and of assaulting a woman in a Beverly Hills hotel the next night.
If convicted, he could get up to 28 years in prison.
L-A Police also say they’re investigating three more sex assault cases that could result in more charges.
