While continuing to urge Canadians to stay home and follow recommended steps to stop the spread of COVID-19, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced financial help is on the way to help Canadians and businesses get through the pandemic.
”Tomorrow (Wednesday) we will be making another major announcement on economic actions to support Canadians as quickly as possible.  By the end of the week, we will have more to say about changes for the upcoming tax season,” Trudeau added.
The prime minister also says Parliament may be temporarily recalled to bring in emergency economic measures.
For example, he says the government’s considering whether to invoke the Emergencies Act or if there are other steps it could take to protect Canadians.
The Act allows for extraordinary measures such as travel restrictions or protecting essential goods and supplies.
Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland says that would be a ”last resort,” which would only be brought in after consultation with provinces and territories.
As for Ottawa declaring a national state of emergency in the wake of Ontario’s decision to do so, Trudeau says so far it’s not needed to respond to the crisis.
